Main directions / Complex geophysical investigations

Sevmorgeo performs:

  • 4-component marine seismic observations using autonomous bottom seismic stations (ADSS)
  • Kinematic, tomography and dynamic processing of refracted and reflected waves, processing of multi-component data
  • Joint interpretation of acoustic and gravity-magnetic data, geological interpretation.

Main research techniques:

Investigation using autonomous bottom stations:

  • Prospecting seismology KMPV-GSZ
  • Electromagnetic testing
  • Magnetotelluric sounding
  • Gas-geochemical testing
  • Thermal current measurement

On-board techniques:

  • Prospecting seismology MOV-OGT
  • Gravimetric and magnetometric observations
  • Acoustic measurements

In Sevmorgeo development of bottom seismic stations for MPV GSZ operations has been under way since 1982. The laboratory-developed marine seismic complex Granitsa with analogous seismic stations having one component recording was put into operation in the Murmansk Complex Marine Arctic Geophysical Expedition (KMAGE) where it was used for seismic profiling (MPV) over the distance of thousands kilometers in the Atlantic Ocean. Upon appearance of the new element base there have been developed several modifications of digital bottom seismic stations parameters of which correspond to modern standards pertaining to such equipment.

Since 1995 the upgraded 3-component unit Granitsa-3K has been used on the geotraverse in the Barents-Kara region. Between 1995 and 2002 were profiled 1330 km of the 1-АР profile (sea part) and the 2-АР profile of 935 km long. Total volume of seismic work performed by the Granitsa -3К unit of the geotraverse is 2265 km of profiles.

Starting form 1995 hitherto the Sevmorgeo has been conducting complex geophysical investigations on the geo traverse in the Barents and Kara Seas. The main goal of this work is to build a deep-sea model of the Barents-Kara shelf bed and contiguous tectonic blocks along the geo traverse lines in the Zapoliarny zone (Kola Peninsula), the Kheisa Island (Franz Josef Land Arch.) and Yamal Pen., Spitsbergen Archipelago. Operations on geo traverses 1-АР and 2-АР are an integral part of all-Russia’s regional research program under which during the last decade have been conducted regular investigations in Russia and CIS countries with the aim to create a state grid of reference geophysical profiles. On the 1-АР profile there has been used a set of geophysical techniques consisting of different seismic operations along the profile (GSZ and MOV OGT), accompanying on-board gravity-magnetic survey and aeromagnetic survey within the strip of 100 km. On the 2-АР profile there have been performed only GSZ works, the MOV-OGT works are under way.

Work outcome:

  • The cross-section of the Barents-Kara bed has been investigated throughout its whole depth.
  • All sedimentary systems have been examined
  • Zones of potential hydrocarbon accumulation have been identified
  • Total probable resources of the prospective Barents Hydrocarbon Basin (NGB) have been specified
